Join us March 11-12 for a 24-hour hackathon open to all Post-Secondary students with an interest in computing and entrepreneurship. Students from all faculties and of all skill levels are welcome. Sign up as a junior/senior developer, project manager, or designer!

Come build a project with your peers to boost your portfolio! You can try out new technologies and connect with other students.

This is a low-stakes, casual, and free-of-charge event. A great way for you to experiment and socialize without any pressure!

Your team's video submission must be uploaded to DevPost by March 12, 12:00 PM PST.

Hack the Break 2023 is hosted by volunteers, including members from the BCIT Computing Club, Women in Computing, Coding for All, and BCIT Dev Hub.

Requirements

Your video pitch must be submitted by March 12, 12:00 PM PST.

Format:

It must be a link to a Youtube video that is publically accessible.

It must 3 minutes long, give or take 10 seconds.

It must include:

  • Project description
  • The problem it's solving
  • A demo of your project

The application that demonstrates eye catching UI alongside an innovative and clear UX usage will win:

BCIT Women in Computing Award

Award will be given to a team comprising of at least three female-identifying members. The judging parameters for this competition will emphasize ingenuity and an exceptional user interface. The executive team at BCIT WIC will be responsible for judging this category.

BCIT Computing Club Choice Award

Award will be given to the team that provides the most innovative solution to the main theme that demonstrates both originality and disruptive innovation(Team must consist of current BCIT students).
$200 CAD

First Time Hacker Award

Awarded to a team entirely consisted of first time hackers only.
$200 CAD

Audience Best Choice Award (3)

The top 3 applications chosen by the community will receive
$100 CAD for their team.

Judging Criteria

  • Design
    "Does the project have a distinctive, visually appealing design that sets it apart from other submissions? Is it also user-friendly and easy to navigate?
  • Quality of Idea and Potential Impact
    How innovative is the project? What specific problem does it solve, and how much value does it bring to its users? Additionally, we will consider if the project is usable for the general population.
  • Implementation
    Has the project been executed well? Are the features beyond wireframes and actually clickable, providing a seamless user experience?
  • Presentation
    How well does the project present itself? Does the demo feature an engaging and creative live walkthrough that showcases the project's features and benefits? Most importantly, does the demo effectively communicate the project's value to the audience?
